George and Harold are two imaginative pranksters who make the depressing Jerome Horwitz School a better place. They hypnotize their nemesis, the mean-spirited principal Mr. Krupp. He transforms into the incredibly clueless yet kind-hearted and enthusiastic superhero named Captain Underpants. Even without the mean principal, they discover that having Captain Underpants comes at a steep price. Meanwhile, Professor Poopypants tries to eliminate laughter with the school snitch Melvin, and George and Harold discover that there may be more to Mr. Krupp than they had originally thought.
I was hoping for something like the Sausage Party, or a dumbed down, family friendly South Park. And this is not. It is dumbed down. It is family friendly. It seems to make fun, while at the same time embracing, the Super Hero culture. It might work as a filler and the story runs smooth, yet at the end it's still: so what? It looks like it has been done by too many minds and hands and many things do not fit. First you have the mandatory school as a place of killing the fun and the creativity and than you have a few pro teacher union slogans fit in.
Tra la laaaaa!!!!<br/><br/>The hit children's book series finally makes it to the big screen (what took them so long?) in all its scatological silliness. The film does a terrific job of capturing the spirit and tone of the books, and there's no sense in rolling your eyes at the potty humor, because that's exactly what Captain Underpants is there to deliver. I saw this with my wife and two sons, and let me just say that my kids weren't the only ones giggling throughout.<br/><br/>Grade: A-
In an increasingly mean-spirited world, the spirit of fun and kindness in Captain Underpants is simply a tonic.
